Day 20 – 8,797 KM. Town 32: So far I have found some fantastic places that have only been linked by the fact they are included in the lyrics of a song. Whether a small country town or the nations capital there has always been something of interest worth discovering. However, I was a bit concerned when I read a description of Unanderra, a suburb south of Wollongong… “Unanderra has several local attractions, including a Kebab shop, an old school building in the Woolworth’s carpark.”.
So on visiting Unanderra I was keen to find something of interest. Sadly I was unable to do so during my visit, but on my return and some Googling later, I did find that Unanderra was actually home to many migrants to Australia (£10 poms) between the 1950’s and 1970’s and for these people, they appear to have very fond recollections of the town.
Unanderra was the home to a Government Hostel which was constructed to house new members of the Australian population and relieve refugee distress. The Wollongong area was chosen due to its production of coal, iron and steel, and the jobs these industries created. Further information on the hostel may be found here – http://www.migrantweb.com/unanderrahostel/index.html
I was unable to find the Kebab Shop, but did find the train station before moving on the Wollongong.
