DAY 9. Town 12: Bambaroo is located in North East Queensland, about three hours south of Cairns. There is not much to say about Bambaroo other than it is a Queensland district with only a School at its centre.
Bambaroo is the most northerly of the Queensland located ‘I’ve been everywhere’ locations. However, this has not stopped me heading a little further north to Cairns.
Some nine years ago, almost to the day, I stepped on to Australian soil for the first time at Cairns. I simply could not resist the temptation to revisit the home to my Australian initiation.
Cairns does not appear to have changed. It’s still the bustling, multi-cultural, backpacking holiday town it always was. My old backpackers is still there, as is the kebab and pizza selling stalls along the esplanade. The oppressive humidity is still in the air and the pushy restaurant staff are still trying to encourage tourists into their establishments.
Cairns is almost theatrical. It is an Australian show giving tourists what they want to see Australia as. Having just come from the outback I can not help but feel the show on display and the reality is quite different. Yes, Cairns is a fun and friendly place to visit but ‘tourist Cairns’ is little more than a theme park.
