Town 14: Today I left Rockhampton (or Rocky as the locals call it) for another Queensland location, Gin Gin. Gin Gin is a thriving town, it seemed a hive of activity as people went about their business.
Gin Gin is also the holder of the Friendliest Town Award (2003) so perhaps this is partially responsible for its popularity? Indeed the staff at a local cafe were more than helpful as I purchased a coffee and apple slice.
The only other thing to note is a lot of white lines around the town. I am unsure if the lines man is a local or not, but impeccable white lines seem to be everywhere.
When I saw Gin Gin I thought of the 1 in WA not in QLD! Maybe you havent finished yet! lol
Hi Rosy. In 1959 Geoff Mach, the writer of the song had been working at a Holiday resort in Coolingatta in Queensland for some time when he received an invitation to perform a cabaret act in Sydney. He wanted to write an opening number for this new act so whilst sitting in his panel van, with maps for Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria alongside him, he started penning his opening act. Geoff confirmed that the song was written in Queensland, not Sydney as sometimes is reported and the maps available to him explain why, with the exception of Darwin, there are no towns in the song from the Northern Territory, West Australia, South Australia or Tasmania – including the WA version of Gin Gin.
You forgot the toilets. There’s like 6 or 7 public toilet blocks down the middle of the main drag of Gin Gin lol
Thanks John. We’ll give the toilets an honourable mention here in the comments 🙂
